Jon Pryor, MD, MS, MBA

Executive Coach

A healthcare executive for more than two decades, Jon Pryor is known for his rich leadership experience spanning academic, public, and large rural health systems, where his focus has been on transformative organizational change. Jon is a big believer in servant leadership and has a passion for developing teams and individuals through new experiences, coaching, and mentoring.

As an academician at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Jon was immersed in medical student and resident education, basic science and clinical research, and had a busy clinical practice. In that role, he was quickly promoted to a tenured professor and became department Chair. After earning his MBA, Jon left academia and pivoted to the business of healthcare and executive management.

As a consultant at McKinsey & Company, Jon was involved in the spectrum of healthcare, from insurers to pharma to large health systems. He worked on mergers, strategy, and teaching lean management. He then shifted to executive management as the CEO of the adult practice at Medical College of Wisconsin. Jon subsequently became CEO of Hennepin Healthcare, then President of the East Market at Essentia Health. In all of these positions Jon was involved with difficult culture change such as introducing lean management as part of everyday work, starting rigorous strategic planning and executing on goals, and improving effective governance. His favorite value has always been “teamwork,” building highly effective teams that promote curiosity in an environment of respect. Jon was named one of ten “Most Admired CEOs” by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Magazine in 2018.

A leadership mentor and coach for more than a decade, Jon is trained by Lean Pathways and is currently pursuing his coaching certification through the Hudson Institute.

Jon lives in Minnesota with his wife (a state legislator), three children and seven grandchildren. He enjoys cooking, practicing martial arts (5th degree black belt in taekwondo) and playing the violin.
