Michael S. Hein, MD, MHCM, ACC has over 20 years of healthcare leadership experience in multi-specialty practice, large integrated health systems, academic medicine, and start-up companies. He has extensive clinical leadership experience and deep knowledge in transformational change. He integrates his past experiences as an athletic coach, teacher, clinician, and leader into his work as an executive coach to elevate individual leadership performance in complex systems and help executives, including emerging or existing physician executives, achieve unsurpassed results.

Dr. Hein is a former CEO of a large (60 member) non-merger network of hospitals and health systems in the Midwest. Additionally, he was a Chief Medical Officer within the Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) system. He practiced in rural Nebraska and South Dakota before leaving private practice to join the Veteran’s Health Administration (VA) where he held numerous leadership roles at a local, regional and national level.

Dr. Hein earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Sandford School of Medicine at The University of South Dakota along with his Master of Science in Exercise Physiology and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He also has a Master in Healthcare Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Hein trained as a general internal medicine physician at Gundersen Health in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He received his formal executive coaching training through The Hudson Institute, and is a Certified Hudson Institute Coach and an Associate Certified Coach from the International Coaching Federation. Dr. Hein’s area of interests includes complex adaptive systems, physician leadership development, executive leadership transitions, physician burnout, and leading from wholeness.

Currently, he and his wife, Connie, reside in rural central Nebraska. Dr. Hein is an avid cyclist and swimmer and he continues to coach cyclists, competive swimmers, and triathletes which he has done his entire adult life. He and his wife have three adult children who also reside in Nebraska.
