I read an article recently about gratitude and happiness. A familiar subject. One idea, however, would not let go of me.
The author suggested that expressing gratitude does not require us to feel fully grateful in the moment. That our insistence on emotional authenticity can sometimes keep us from acknowledging what is already here.
This showed up for me during a recent dinner celebrating a colleague and friend. That colleague, who was aware of recent challenges in my life, asked, “You look really happy. Is it real, or is it a façade?”
At the time, I answered honestly, “Yes! I actually am really happy!” Later, I realized the question pointed to something many leaders wrestle with.
In high-responsibility roles, we are taught to be vigilant. To scan for what is missing. To anticipate risk. To carry the weight of what has not yet gone right.
Performance and Presence may be easily confused.
But what I was expressing was not a polished exterior. It was not positivity layered over pressure. It was presence.
I was happy to be there.
Happy to be with the team.
Happy to have the conversation.
Happy to express appreciation.
Joy did not come from things being easy. It came from being fully here.
Over time, I have learned that leadership presence is built the same way. Not by fixing the future or replaying the past, but by meeting the moment as it is.
When I return to the present, the truth is remarkably consistent.
I am safe.
I am capable.
I am grounded.
I am free.
Free from the mental loops of past regret and future anxiety that so often drive reactive leadership.
This is not indifference. It is clarity.
From this place, leaders listen better. Decide more cleanly. Connect more authentically. And paradoxically, carry responsibility with less strain.
So, nothing has changed.
And yet, everything has changed.
Leadership reflection: Where might your leadership soften and strengthen at the same time if you trusted the moment you are already in?
If this reflection resonates, I would be curious what you are noticing in your own leadership right now.
